Cause: Parvovirus B19 is a human-specific virus that particularly affects red cell precursors located within the bone marrow. This virus mainly spreads through respiratory secretions: saliva, mucus, and droplets from coughing or sneezing.
Transmission: The infection spreads through schools and daycare centers, particularly by late winter and early spring. It is a contagious infection when incubation occurs until the rash sets in, wherein it takes nearly 4-14 days from exposure to the agent. During this stage, the infected persons are not contagious once the rash starts to appear.

This happens in less than 5% of cases.
