- Some headaches can be brutal which requires immediate attention pertaining to systemic illness whereas others might be considered as an acute symptom that subsides with stress relief.
- Headache is classified under 2 categories as Primary headache and Secondary headache as per its cause and effect.
Types of headache
1. Primary Headache:
These combine a group of illnesses pertaining to headache which can be episodic or continuous which are categorized as follows namely.
2. Tension headache:
This is said to be a chronic headache with a tight band-like discomfort that builds slowly and remains for a longer duration which usually occurs due to mental stress. There may be dullness over the scalp.
3. Migraine:
Unilateral throbbing pain which is moderate or severe in intensity accompanying nausea, photophobia, blind spots, flashing lights, zig-zag lines.
4. Cluster Headache:
This is usually unilateral piercing burning deep retro-orbital excruciating pain which has daily bouts of 1 to 2 attacks of shorter duration
5. Exertional headache:
This headache usually appears after the severe physical exertion of the body by heavy lifting running, vigorous exercise.
6. Sinus headache:
This usually occurs due to a sinus infection causing pressure and nasal congestion along with pain between the eyebrows and the upper part of the nose.
7. Hormonal headache:
Menstruation,oral contraceptives pills, and pregnancy affect estrogen level causing headache
8. Secondary Headache:
These combine a variety of pathological illnesses such as
- Systemic infections such as hypertension, diabetes
- Head injury
- Vascular disorders
- Brain tumor
- Meningitis or encephalitis
- Intracranial haemorrhage
Accompanying symptoms with headache requiring immediate attention:
- Stiffness

- Physical examination with a detailed history of headache including type duration and onset.
- Various tests such as eye test hearing test, blood pressure monitoring, pulse rate.

Homeopathic Management

Belladonna:
This is one of the best effective remedy for severe congestive headache. There is a feeling of heaviness in head .Some people often complain of splitting type of headache which usually settles in one eye. Constant feeling of dryness in mouth with excessive thirst is well marked feature of this remedy .

Sanguinaria:
This is one of the effective remedy for right sided headache with tension in neck and shoulder which also extends to forehead and settles in eyes .headache usually becomes worse by light, noise ,discomfort and it gets better after vomiting or passing gas.

Cyclamen:
Usually this remedy is prone to people who have dizziness ,giddiness along with flickering in the eyes .There is also pain in ears . Severe bursting type of headache present which gets worse in open air and cold weather. Mentally person is very emotional anxious always have a feeling of being left alone.

Spigelia:
This is usually prescribed to people who have headaches more commonly on the left side . There is an excruciating type of pain present along with the severe intensity of throbbing and bursting pain in the eyeball. Pain aggravates more on continuous motion or touch and feels better by lying on the right side and supporting the head.

Lachesis:
Left-sided headache which increases more on tight clothing. Flushed red appearance of the face. Headache aggravates more by heat and by lying down .severe stinging type of pain present which changes the locality Dullness in the head with blurred vision is also a well-marked feature of this remedy.
